Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach
Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach(German, 1851 - 1913)

Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach was a radical visionary who fused Symbolist art with a total rebellion against industrial society. Following a near-fatal illness, he turned into a barefoot prophet, loudly advocating for pacifism, a strict vegetarian diet, and naturism. His alternative lifestyle earned him public ridicule as a “kohlrabi apostle,” but it also deeply inspired modern counterculture movements.

His paintings functioned as visual extensions of his mystical philosophies. He abandoned traditional decoration to construct dark, monumental landscapes filled with heavy shadows, dense fog, and dramatic bursts of light. He populated his dreamlike canvases with mythological nymphs and ethereal silhouettes dancing in harmony with the natural world.

Facing public hostility, he spent his final years on the rugged island of Capri, painting its rocky coasts.
